So you want to hop on to a new adventure, like a new job, or are looking for new opportunities, want more challenges or you want to be your own boss. In any case you need to quit your job with grace and keep an opening, because you might one day want to return. I recently quit my job and I’ve learned some valuable lessons that I want to share with you.
There are some rules you should follow when handing in your resignation. It should always be in writing but you should always talk to your boss first. Don’t make the mistake to send your resignation by SMS or say “I quit” when you are enraged. You wouldn’t want to do that would you? Inform about your resignation when you are calm and when you have thought about it well.
I have changed jobs 3 times in my life and I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t.
Below are my 5 tips for quitting your job with grace and keeping your bridges intact.
1. Tell you boss face to face
There are formal procedures on how to resign.
The most important thing to do, first thing in the morning, is to inform your boss that you want to have a quick talk with her in private. In calm and positive manner tell her your plans about quitting and be positive about the time and experience you have had at the company. Do not be rude, angry or negative about anything because you want a recommendation from the management. And you might want to come back to the company in the future, so keep a healthy relationship with your boss and colleagues. You want to be professional, right?
At my last job I had to inform my boss on the phone, because he was not in the office at the moment and I really had to talk to him. I asked him that I wanted to talk to him in private and when I could expect him to come by the office. He was very curious why I was asking for a slot to talk to him in person and it just naturally progressed for me to mention on the phone that I wanted to resign. And surprisingly it went really well. But this might not be the case for everyone as it depends from person to person.
2. Plan the transfer of responsibilities
You should always plan to hand over responsibilities you were in charge of to colleagues and managers. You don’t want to be called up by ex colleagues and ex managers to get clarification, would you?
It is very important that you do not want your boss or colleagues keep guessing about what need to be done and what is finished. It might give bad impressions to clients that you did not inform your current employer about the engagements that you had with the clients. Having a good reputation should be a priority in your professional career.
Make an organized overview of the responsibilities you had in the company and who need to be followed up, both on the client side and internally towards colleagues. This will leave the impression of you being a responsible and mature coworker, both toward your current employer and the new employer.
You’d want to have a nice recommendation, right?
3. Always keep in touch
If you value your network it is very important to keep in touch with your people from your former workplace. Accept invites to seminars, dinner invitations or other gatherings from ex colleagues and ex managers. Meeting up with them can result in expanding your network further because you might get insight to valuable information, i.e. trends in your trade.
Keeping in touch will also improve the impression of you being a person who is good at networking. This is especially important for persons working in sales and management. But this is equally important if you have developed friendships at a workplace and to keep these friendships you should always keep in touch.
You want to be remembered as a nice person, right?
4. Update on social media
Once you have joined a new company in a new positions or you have started your own venture, it is a good idea to share the good news to your network. Update you social media profiles, especially LinkedIn as this is the most important for your professional career. Twitter is second and at third place – Facebook. This is my personal rating and you should feel to do what is most reasonable to you. What’s your preference?
Social media is the best and most practical way to market yourself and your career. You can get new connections and new business this way.

5. Resign in writing
After you have had the conversation with your boss hand him over you resignation letter. Keep the resignation letter simple but formal. Be positive and inform what your last day of work will be. Address you boss with respect and thank her for the opportunity. A resignation letter will help to maintain a positive relationships with your former workplace.
Even if you trust the persons, still wouldn’t hurt to be formal, right?
These are all tips for leaving your job with grace and to keep the bridges open in the future because you never know what will happen down the road. I have seen companies being shut down or being acquired by bigger companies, and something like this might lead you back to former colleagues and management.
